An open letter to Karma - from “Mum & Dad”

Karma Rescue sheep Furever Farm Animal Sanctuary

It would take a travesty for us to meet. And such is our love for you, we would remain anonymous to remove all of that initial pain.

Travesty hardly describes the circumstance of our union, sweet Karma. Furthermore we could add injustice, savagery and cruelty so criminal should you have been born a dog. But, your luck was not to be in your design. Born unto this earth a "farmed animal", and "possessed" by an individual so flippantly callous, you were left to suffer with no legal right, no required repair.

Yes, this would be the ONLY possitive of your abuse, beautiful boy. You and we would meet, and we would become inseparable, devoted in ways most would never understand.

We remember with clarity the anxiety of your predicament. For in front of us stood a young boy so beautiful, so innocent, but so ravished by injury. Our first thoughts would be your health, to save a soul destined to die should nothing continue to be done. Oh, and the toil and struggle you would endure. Our adoration would see us beside you each step of the way, feeling your pain with you, wishing it away in place of comfort and ease. Your fight would be long, arduous, and uncertain. But, in your nature lay a strength unbelievable, stoicism to inspire.

Your recovery from your injuries would see you lose your leg, but gain a family who was so committed to embracing you as an individual, loving you as someone. Alongside us, your "parents", sat thousands of devotees worldwide who would also grow to love you. Such was our worship of you we were all too happy to share you, for you deserved recognition, you had more than earned your celebrity status.

Closer to home, after your initial repair, hearts fluttered and butterflies swirled. Ah, we can safely suggest that these feelings were mutual. We suspect such from your trust and attachment to us. Like the growing of a puppy in the home of a dog lover, so was your impact on those who stood beside you. We would stand both proud and adoring of you, our sweet. Such pride in your ability and will to overcome what would have halted many. And, in love with your love; openly displayed without hesitation nor uncertainty.

For such a time our bond would grow. Yes, we became "mum & dad", and we care not for the opinion of others in using that term. For family and the love which commits need not be of the same species. Rather pureness and genuineness, of feeling and emotion. Such emotions would flow freely, acts would seem like common sense. We speak of the little things: the playful chatter, the pats upon the head, the loving and warm embrace, the declarations of love administered with true meaning. We simply cannot express in words the utmost affection and fondness we felt for you. Yes, sweet Karma, you were our "puppy".

Of course, the art of true love rarely runs smoothly. It is tested in so many untimely and unfair ways. Your initial repair would be manyfold. If there lay a God they erred in their ways, for you were subjected to ills that the good did not deserve. But, again, you were so defiant in your reckoning. Determined to overcome were you, as we to see you survive. And, on many an occasion, success would prevail. Onward marched the puppy with cherishment by his side.

For three and a half years our love remained steadfast. Never a waver, always in sync. For as we caressed you so you caressed us. The snuggling of the species was true and absolute. Then, you would be taken from us, beautiful. Your body too damaged by your initial injustice, that body too tired and worn to accept further change. On one day we would sit with you for hours. Just speaking, holding and looking deep into your big beautiful eyes. Yours would express gratitude and love for those sitting in front of you. Ours would be filled with devotion whilst fighting back tears so as not to upset you. For on this day we knew what we had to do, and we knew that you were ready.

It took all of our feeble strength to see you go. But, true love is just that: the act of letting go to alleviate irreparable pain and suffering. We would see you go, sweetheart, but we could not instantly accept it. We held your head as you drifted. Karma, we made sure that ours were the faces and voices you would see and hear last. It was the right thing to do. Parents farewelling their son in a final act of kindness.

We now long for the days of happy memories, sweet boy. But, oh how we struggle. Ours and yours was a relationship so uniquely special. Again, many would not fathom the emotion between humans and sheep. But, we can assure, there is nothing quite like it. You were our world. Writing this about you....to you....tears are welling, emotions are swelling. Sadness cradles our hearts as we long to see and hold you once more. Our feelings for you are immesurable, they stand the length of time and defy a world that views your kind as simply objects. As with the life we had together we engage multitudes of feelings with many descriptions. The greatest and most simple is unrequited love. We do and always will love you, our boy. We recall with tears the feelings within, the acts of a bond so great it is simply astonishing. We will one day recall such feelings and acts without tears. Instead we will smile, overjoyed at you alone. But, we need time. Now we hurt. We remain puzzled by any greater forces motives.

To say goodbye in any instance is difficult. To say such amongst the loving is painful. And while we would never reverse our decision we question why it had to be made. You simply deserved more. It was not "your time", for you held youth, you had many ages to uphold. But our loving relationship and all it involved was strong. There is no room for selfishness amongst the unified. And, as one we live....we lose together.

Saying goodbye was so incredibly difficult, bubba. But, we would do it again in similar circumstance. We now await your return to embracing loving arms, Karma. Your ashes will remain with us forever. And, when we meet in another plain you will be beside us, scattered with the very people who loved you unconditionally as you did them. And that is what is so beautiful about our life together, albeit so fleeting. There were no conditions, no expectations, zero demands. All each required of the other was acceptance, love and the devotion to do whatever it took to ensure happiness, joy and safety. In such an act all were successful.

May there be a somewhere, a something for you to look down upon us and wander amongst us. If so we will feel it; our shared love was so strong. It may sound bizzare or exaggerated to some, but we long to see you again, beautiful Karma. Until such time we will be content with our memories. For such reminiscence is golden. Never to forget, never to cease our love.

Thank you for meeting us, Karma. We simply adore you.

Mum & Dad.
